Erbil restaurant apologises after ad featuring Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ sparks backlash, closure
ERBIL — Security forces in Erbil shut down UK PIZZA & More on Sunday after the restaurant used Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” in an advertisement with the phrase “the last slice,” a move that drew objections from members of the Christian community.
Erbil district commissioner Nabaz Abdul Hamid told 964media, “We closed a fast food restaurant in one of Erbil’s neighborhoods after confirming that it wrote in English in a Facebook ad ‘the last slice’ (The Last Supper), which is one of the Christian sacred paintings that represents Jesus Christ with his 12 disciples. We reject any topics that lead to sedition and contempt of religions.”
The restaurant later issued an apology, saying the ad was the result of a mistake by its marketing team. “We sincerely apologize to our Christian brothers and sisters for the inconvenience or resentment caused by the recent post,” the statement said. “The picture that was published was never intended to insult or show disrespect. Unfortunately, it was the result of an error by the marketing team who used an old painting without proper research into its historical and religious value.”
The management added that while the goal was “purely creative” and part of a broader campaign using well-known art pieces, the lack of awareness in this case led to unintended offense. “We express our deep regret and apology once again,” the statement read. “We reaffirm our deep respect for all religions and communities and assure you that we have taken the necessary measures to ensure such a matter will not be repeated.”
