Four drown in Khazir River near Bardarash, bringing Kurdistan’s toll to 37 this year
DUHOK — Four young people drowned early Monday in the Khazir River near the village of Qaymawa in Bardarash district, according to local civil defense officials.
The victims were identified as Asma Mohammed, 22; Mahmoud Jamal, 21; Bilal Kamal, 18; and Mohammed Kamal, 17. All four drowned around 7 a.m. while swimming near the border between Bardarash and Akre districts.
Ibrahim Fareeq, head of the Akre district civil defense unit, confirmed the incident to 964media and said the bodies were recovered by the Bardarash civil defense team.
“Two of them were brothers, and one was a girl. The bodies are currently in the Bardarash emergency services,” Fareeq said.
He added that the group had gone to the river for a morning swim. “One of them began to drown, and another jumped in to help. Eventually, all four drowned in the process.”
The incident brings the total number of drownings across the Kurdistan Region this year to 37 as of Aug. 4, according to civil defense officials.
