Iraq braces for extreme heat, dusty conditions across central and southern regions

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Authority forecast scorching temperatures across much of the country on Thursday, with central and southern regions expected to bear the brunt of the summer heat, while scattered clouds are likely in parts of the north, including the Kurdistan Region.

Temperatures in southern Iraq are expected to remain consistent with recent days, with Basra forecast to reach 51 degrees Celsius (123.8 Fahrenheit), according to the latest weather update. Central and northern areas will see a slight dip in temperatures.

Winds are predicted to blow from the north to northwest at light to moderate speeds of 10 to 20 kilometers per hour, occasionally strengthening in eastern parts of central and southern Iraq. The stronger winds may stir up light to moderate dust, particularly during the evening and overnight hours in Wasit and Maysan governorates.

Visibility is expected to range between 8 and 10 kilometers in most areas but could drop to between 4 and 6 kilometers in areas affected by dust.
