Iraq sees rising temperatures, dusty winds amid stable summer conditions
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s weather authority reported hotter and dustier conditions Monday as temperatures rose 2 to 3 degrees Celsius across most regions, driven by the continued influence of a dominant surface thermal low.
The Iraqi Meteorological Organization said clear skies and very hot weather prevailed in central and southern governorates, with scattered clouds appearing in the north. Daytime highs reached 45°C in Basra, Maysan, and Dhi Qar; 44°C in Najaf, Diwaniyah, Muthanna, and Wasit; and 43°C in Baghdad and Babil. In the north, Erbil recorded 40°C, Kirkuk 42°C, and Sulaimaniyah posted a relatively milder 39°C.
“Conditions are hot to very hot during the day, especially in central and southern regions,” the agency said in its daily bulletin.
Northwesterly winds ranged between 20 and 30 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 45 kilometers per hour in some areas, kicking up light to moderate dust. Visibility dropped to between 5 and 7 kilometers in affected areas, particularly deserts, but is expected to improve slightly by evening.
Forecasts indicate continued clear skies, steady temperatures, and moderate winds through the week. No rainfall is expected.
Authorities advised caution for people exposed to extreme heat or traveling in dusty areas, where visibility may remain reduced.
