Al-Bukamal crossing to reopen for travel and trade, Syrian officials say

NEWSROOM — Syria’s General Directorate of Land and Maritime Border Crossings announced Wednesday that the Al-Bukamal border crossing with Iraq will reopen to both travelers and cargo trucks on Saturday, June 14, 2025, as part of broader efforts to restore regional trade and mobility.

“The crossing will be open for the movement of passengers and trucks with Iraq beginning Saturday,” the directorate said in a statement, noting that staff and service facilities at the site are fully prepared for operations.

The Al-Bukamal crossing, known as Al-Qaim on the Iraqi side, connects Syria’s Deir ez-Zor governorate with Iraq’s Anbar governorate. It is one of the region’s key transport corridors and holds long-standing strategic importance for trade and movement between the two countries.

The site was closed in December 2024 amid armed clashes that contributed to the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Syrian forces withdrew from multiple eastern positions during the fighting, triggering the shutdown of several crossings, including Al-Bukamal.

Authorities in Damascus said they expect the reopening to boost both commercial and civilian traffic. The border agency urged all travelers and drivers to comply with official regulations. “We ask all passengers and truck drivers to adhere to the official regulations to ensure smooth and safe movement through the crossing,” the statement said.
