Iraq, Iran sign agreement to expand cooperation on legal and ‘human rights’ issues
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Justice announced Tuesday it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran’s Human Rights Committee to expand cooperation on legal and human rights matters.
The agreement was finalized during a visit by Iraqi Justice Minister Khalid Shwani to Tehran, where he met with Dr. Nasser Al-Sarraj, head of Iran’s Human Rights Committee.
“Both sides emphasized the importance of this step in light of shared challenges, and expressed their desire for a strategic partnership based on mutual understanding and knowledge exchange,” Iraq’s Justice Ministry said in a statement.
The memorandum outlines plans to strengthen institutional and technical collaboration, develop legal capacities, and coordinate positions in regional and international forums.

As part of joint efforts between the Republic of Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran to promote human rights concepts and exchange legal expertise, Iraq’s Ministry of Justice and Iran’s Human Rights Committee signed an official memorandum of understanding aimed at developing bilateral cooperation mechanisms in this vital field.
The agreement was signed during a visit by Iraqi Minister of Justice Dr. Khalid Shwani to Tehran, where he met with Dr. Nasser Al-Sarraj, head of Iran’s Human Rights Committee, along with several senior officials.
The memorandum outlines plans to strengthen technical and institutional cooperation between the two countries in the field of human rights, develop capacities and build competencies, and coordinate positions in relevant regional and international forums.
