Human remains found on Duhok project site believed to be over 140 years old

DUHOK — Construction workers uncovered human bones and skulls Monday during excavation for a road project in Rovya subdistrict, Bardarash district, prompting an investigation by local antiquities authorities.

The remains were found during work on the Rovya dual-side project. On Tuesday, a team from the Akre Antiquities Directorate visited the site and confirmed the discovery of two graves.

“We were informed yesterday evening about the discovery of several bones and skulls at the Rovya dual-side project,” Hiwa Shamal, director of antiquities in Akre, told 964Media. “Today a team visited the site and confirmed that two graves were uncovered.”

The skeletal remains have been transferred to the Akre Antiquities Directorate, where they will be examined by an Italian archaeological team working in the area. Shamal said preliminary assessments suggest the graves may date back more than 140 years.

Rovya subdistrict administrator Munahel Muwaffaq said construction was paused briefly after the discovery but resumed Tuesday after the site was secured.
