Wanted under terrorism charges

Terror suspect dies by suicide during Karbala raid, police say

KARBALA — A suspect wanted on terrorism charges died by suicide during a security operation in Karbala’s Al-Du’um area on Sunday, according to a statement from Karbala police. One officer was injured during the raid.

The announcement followed social media claims suggesting a security officer had been killed in a dispute, which authorities denied.

Police said the suspect shot himself before he could be arrested, during a joint operation carried out by Karbala police and the Directorate of Intelligence and Counterterrorism. The individual was reportedly wanted under the Anti-Terrorism Law.

The statement noted that security forces had surrounded the house and blocked all exits when the suspect opened fire and then turned the weapon on himself.

“One of our personnel was injured during the clash and was transported to the hospital to receive the necessary treatment,” the statement added.

A formal investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the incident. Police emphasized their continued commitment to preemptive operations and tracking down wanted individuals to maintain security and stability in the governorate.
