Duhok authorities investigate felling of century-old trees in Amedi’s Kwane area
DUHOK — A number of ancient trees have been cut down in the Kwane community of Amedi district, prompting an investigation by the Duhok Forest Protection Command, officials said Friday.
The destruction was discovered earlier in the day by a group of young visitors to the area. The trees, some believed to be nearly a century old, were found felled along the banks of the Sapna River in eastern Amedi, within Duhok governorate.
“We were informed that a large number of old trees were cut down within the Kwane area,” said Col. Jamal Saadon, head of the Duhok Forest Protection Command. “So far, we don’t know who did it.”
Saadon said a forest protection unit would be dispatched to the site Saturday to begin a detailed investigation. “A forest protection team will visit the site and thoroughly investigate the case,” he said. “Whoever is behind this will be arrested without exception and punished according to the law.”
Kwane is known for its dense forests and scenic landscapes, making it a frequent destination for visitors to Amedi district.
