Short circuit blamed
Electrical warehouse fire in Garmian causes $400,000 in damages
GARMIAN — A fire broke out early Wednesday at a warehouse storing electrical equipment in the Rizgari subdistrict of Garmian, Sulaymaniyah governorate, destroying most of the facility’s contents and causing an estimated $400,000 in damage, officials said.
Ibrahim Mohammed, spokesperson for Garmian’s civil defense department, told 964media the fire was “massive” and took nearly four hours to contain. “Four teams were involved in the effort to bring it under control,” he said.
Ismail Mohammed, head of the Rizgari firefighting station, said the fire began around 1:30 a.m. due to an electrical short circuit. “Most of the equipment was destroyed,” he said, noting that flammable materials inside the warehouse fueled the flames.
The fire remained confined to the warehouse and did not spread to surrounding structures, he added. Additional support was provided by neighboring firefighting units.
Warehouse owner Burhan Mohammed confirmed the cause and said the facility stored a range of electrical supplies. “The damage exceeds $400,000,” he told 964media.
