BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani marked International Workers’ Day on Wednesday by reaffirming his government’s commitment to labor rights and pledging to uphold legal and financial protections for Iraq’s workforce.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation and best wishes to all workers in Iraq and around the world,” Al-Sudani said in a statement. “This occasion reaffirms our unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of all workers — women and men alike.”
Both the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government declared Thursday, May 1, an official public holiday in observance of International Workers’ Day.
Statement from PM Al-Sudani’s media office:
We extend our heartfelt appreciation and best wishes to all workers in Iraq and around the world on the International Workers’ Day. This occasion reaffirms our unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of all workers—women and men alike. This commitment is reflected in the implementation of the Labor Retirement and Social Security Law, which fosters an environment where the creativity and productivity of the workforce can thrive, while ensuring their legal and financial rights are fully safeguarded.
We emphasize that the momentum of labor and construction will not slow down, driven by the determination of the Iraqi people to build and advance their nation, expand opportunities for development and employment, and provide new economic and industrial prospects.
