Al-Sudani meets Syrian Shia leader

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Tuesday with Sayyid Abd Allah Nidham, head of the Shia community in Syria, to discuss recent developments in the country, according to a statement from the prime minister’s media office.

During the meeting, Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s support for the Syrian people “in all their components,” the statement said.

The meeting follows Al-Sudani’s April 17 talks in Qatar with Syrian interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. The session marked their first official engagement since the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, a transition reportedly facilitated by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

Al-Sharaa’s meeting with Al-Sudani and the potential for his attendance at the upcoming Arab League Summit in Baghdad have drawn criticism from several Iraqi political leaders and parties.

Statement from PM’s media office:

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today, Tuesday, with the Head of the Shia Community in Syria, Sayyid Abd Allah Nidham.

The meeting included a review of the latest developments in Syria and the overall situation there. Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast support for the Syrian people, in all their components, as well as its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.

The discussion also underscored the importance of unifying messages that promote coexistence and civil peace, emphasizing the role of religious leaders in strengthening social unity, rejecting extremism, and advancing the concept of citizenship. This, in turn, would help achieve social justice and reinforce national cohesion among the Syrian people, thereby contributing to the region’s security and stability.
