Youth cinema forum closes in Baghdad with 20 films in competition
BAGHDAD — The fifth Ramadan Youth Cinema Forum concluded this week in Baghdad’s Al-Salihiya district after four days of screenings, competitions and cultural events organized by the Iraqi Artists Syndicate and the Cinema and Theater Department.
The event was held as part of Baghdad’s designation as the 2025 Arab Capital of Tourism. It featured 40 films, later narrowed to 20 finalists in two categories: student productions and independent films submitted by individuals or companies.
Winning films addressed social topics such as early marriage, drug use and the impact of war.
First place in the individuals and companies category went to “Al-Kamal Al-Ahmar” (“The Red Perfection”), directed by Mohammed Abdul Amir. The film explores the topic of the hymen. Second place went to “8888,” about an Iraqi soldier fleeing the Iran-Iraq War, directed by Ahmed Al-Sammar. Third place went to “Rihab,” directed by Nabil Joy.
In the student category, “Headphone” by Shibar won first place. Second place went to “It Happened in the Bathroom” by Anwar Abdul Shati, followed by “Asr” by Abdullah Al-Bayati.
The forum also included the signing of four books focused on cinema, covering topics such as Arab feature films, cinematic spaces and artificial intelligence in film and television.
Jury chair Shatha Al-Amili said films were judged on production, direction and technical execution. “It was very difficult to choose the winning films because of their artistic value,” she said.
Forum director Fuad Al-Musamim said the selection process included both jury evaluation and audience feedback. “Although the forum is modest and spontaneous, it leaves a mark on participants and attendees alike,” he said.
