Small fire-lighting ceremony planned

Erbil scales back usual Newroz festivities in deference to Ramadan

ERBIL — Erbil officials have canceled large-scale Newroz festivities this year, opting instead for a modest fire-lighting ceremony at the historic Erbil Citadel on the evening of March 20. The move comes as Newroz coincides with Ramadan, prompting a shift away from the usual public revelry.

“Since Newroz falls during the holy month of Ramadan, no official celebrations or events will take place, except for a small ceremony and the lighting of the Newroz fire at the citadel,” said Omed Khoshnaw, governor of Erbil, in an interview with 964media.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has declared March 21, 22, and 23 public holidays in honor of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year traditionally celebrated on March 21 to mark the arrival of spring. However, out of respect for Ramadan, many in Erbil are choosing a quieter observance this year.

Duhok’s Akre district — known as the “Newroz capital” — is preparing for its customary celebration. Authorities there have ramped up safety measures for Thursday evening’s event, when a large crowd is expected to gather for the annual fire-lighting ceremony.
