Hundreds of students race in Wasit’s ‘Spring of Suwaira’ event

WASIT — More than 400 students took part in a three-kilometer race in the Suwaira district of Wasit Governorate on Wednesday, running from the Bait Hassouni Dam in eastern Juweimsa to the Abdali area.

The event, dubbed “The Spring of Suwaira,” was organized by the Suwaira Youth Forum in collaboration with the district’s Directorate of Education to promote sports among young people.

Ali Basil, who won first place, told 964media, “I finished first out of more than 400 participants. This was my second time in the race, last year, I placed third.”

Abbas Khalaf, from the school sports department, described the race as an annual tradition. “It’s a spring event celebrating the season’s arrival and good weather, with participation from local schools. We take pride in this activity as it reflects our commitment to youth and spreading sports culture,” he said.

Wasit Youth and Sports Director Alaa Al-Jorani thanked the Suwaira Directorate of Education for its cooperation. “The Spring of Suwaira is in its second edition and is one of the key activities in our department,” he stated.
