Baghdad police officer honored for preventing suicide on Sinak Bridge
BAGHDAD — A Baghdad police officer prevented a young man from jumping off Sinak Bridge on Tuesday, persuading him to step away from the edge in an intervention praised by local authorities.
“Rusafa Emergency Police rescued a person who attempted suicide from the top of Sinak Bridge,” police said in a statement.
A patrol from Kindi Second Emergency Police spotted the man near the edge and immediately alerted central command before stepping in. Officers managed to talk him down and pull him to safety before he could jump. He was later transferred to a police station for further support.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani honored the officer responsible for the rescue, Lieutenant Raed Fadel Abdul-Jabbar Jabir of the Baghdad Emergency Police Directorate.
“The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces honored an officer from the Emergency Police after he saved a young man’s life,” Iraq’s Joint Operations Command’s Security Media Cell said.
A statement from Sudani’s office said the recognition was meant to “appreciate the heroic and humanitarian act of the police officer” and reaffirm the Prime Minister’s commitment to closely following acts of bravery by security and military personnel in maintaining stability.
