Five-decade run

Houdan family rental business thrives in tribal gatherings

SALAH AL-DIN — For five decades, the Houdan family has been the go-to provider of chairs, tents, cooking equipment, sound systems, and lighting for tribal gatherings in Balad and the surrounding areas of Salah Al-Din Governorate.

The family-run business, handed down through generations, has become a first stop for anyone organizing events—from weddings and funerals to tribal reconciliation meetings. Inherited by brothers Serwan and Salwan Walid from their father and grandfather, the business continues to evolve with modern services, including delivery of rental items.

“This profession is still ongoing despite advancements. People from across the governorate come to us to prepare for their events,” Salwan Walid told 964media.

Serwan Walid pointed out that demand is higher in tribal areas than in cities, where large event halls are more readily available. “These materials are essential for tribal gatherings. Our work has strengthened our ties with tribes across the governorate and the countryside of Balad,” he said.

Longtime customer Abdul Khaliq Sattar shared his loyalty to the family business: “I came from the Hazira area in Balad to rent chairs because they are among the oldest in the trade.” He added, “They are well-known for their fair prices and good service, which is why our area has relied on them for years.”
