Kalar authorities confiscate and destroy shipment spoiled tomatoes
KALAR – Authorities in Kalar, located in Sulaymaniyah’s Garmian Administration, confiscated and destroyed seven tons of spoiled tomatoes transported from southern Iraq, an agricultural inspection official said Saturday.
Mohammed Kweikha Zand, head of the Agricultural Quality Control Laboratory in Garmian, told 964media that officials at the Alwa market in Kalar intercepted the shipment before it could enter the local market. The operation was carried out in coordination with the district administration’s joint committee.
“The tomatoes came from Basra but had spoiled and were no longer fit for consumption, so they were confiscated and disposed of,” Zand said.
He added that any spoiled agricultural products that arrive in Kalar and fail inspection will be seized and destroyed to prevent them from being resold in other markets. Agricultural inspectors at the Alwa market work around the clock to prevent the entry of spoiled or unsafe produce, according to Zand.
On Friday, the laboratory also seized and destroyed shipments of spoiled oranges and potatoes after they failed quality checks.
