Iraq’s speaker of parliament meets top judge after court’s suspension of three new controversial laws
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani visited the Federal Supreme Court on Wednesday, where he met with its head, Jassim Al-Amiri, to discuss legislative processes and reaffirm the judiciary’s role as a “safeguard” for all Iraqis, his office said.
The visit follows the suspension by the country’s top court of three recently passed laws—the amendments to the Personal Status Law, the second amendment to the General Amnesty Law, and the Property Restitution Law—after lawmakers raised legal challenges over the parliamentary procedures used to approve them.
Statement from Al-Mashhadani’s media office:
The Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, conducted a visit to the Federal Supreme Court building on Wednesday.
Speaker Al-Mashhadani met with Judge Jassim Al-Amiri, President of the Federal Supreme Court, and discussed with him the issue of legislation within legal and constitutional frameworks.
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani affirmed that everyone views the Iraqi judiciary as a safeguard and an umbrella for all Iraqis, and that all are committed to its rulings.
The Speaker of Parliament explained that Iraq is witnessing a true and realistic embodiment of democratic principles, as representatives of the people sometimes turn to the Federal Court to exercise their right to object to certain laws and decisions in a democratic manner and within legal frameworks, pointing out that everyone is bound by judicial decisions and what is issued by the Federal Supreme Court.
