Child killed, another injured in village bomb explosion
KIRKUK — A bomb explosion in Tahwila village in Riyadh subdistrict claimed the life of one child and left another seriously injured on Monday evening, authorities reported.
The explosion occurred as two children, aged 12 and 10, were playing, “The explosion occurred Monday evening in Tahwila village while the two children, aged 12 and 10, were playing,” Deham Majid Obeidi, their uncle, told 964media.
A source from the emergency department at Riyadh Hospital informed 964media that one child’s body was “severely mutilated by shrapnel,” while the other injured child was transferred to hospitals in Kirkuk after receiving initial treatment.
Authorities have yet to determine the origin or age of the explosive device. However, officials noted that decades of conflict in Iraq have left behind a dangerous legacy of bombs, landmines, and unexploded ordnance. The remnants of the Iran-Iraq War, along with subsequent internal conflicts and insurgencies led by groups such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS, continue to pose serious risks to civilians, especially in rural areas.
