Iraqi speaker of parliament arrives in Tehran for two-day visit

NEWSROOM — Iraqi Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani arrived in Tehran on Sunday evening, leading a parliamentary delegation on an official visit.

According to a statement from Al-Mashhadani’s office, “came in response to an official invitation from the Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, Mr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, to hold a bilateral meeting within the framework of joint cooperation between the two countries.”

In November 2024, Al-Mashhadani met with Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Kazem Al Sadeq, during which he received an invitation from his Iranian counterpart to visit the Islamic Republic of Iran.

During his two-day visit, Al-Mashhadani is scheduled to meet with several Iranian officials, including Ghalibaf and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

A Sunni politician, Al-Mashhadani has served as Speaker of Parliament since Oct. 31, 2024, and previously held the role from April 2006 to December 2008.
