Souq Al-Shuyukh man keeps homes warm with affordable kerosene heater repairs

DHI QAR — Seated beside Najada Mosque in Souq Al-Shuyukh, 60-year-old repairman Saadi Khalaf has been fixing kerosene heaters for more than four decades. His small workshop draws residents who rely on these heaters amid frequent power outages.

“Kerosene heaters are favored not only for their efficiency but also for creating a warm, communal family atmosphere,” Khalaf told 964media. He sources spare parts from Baghdad, where prices are cheaper than in Dhi Qar. “In Baghdad, I buy original wicks for 3,000 IQD ($2), while here they cost 5,000 IQD ($3),” he said.

Khalaf’s routine involves cleaning and maintaining heaters, removing dust and ensuring the wick functions properly. He also repairs more complex models—such as automatic heaters—that many other repair shops avoid. Despite his expertise, Khalaf keeps rates affordable and even provides free repairs for those unable to pay.

“I have no difficulty in my work. I can fix any heater, no matter how damaged,” he said, adding that customers come from Nasiriyah and surrounding districts.

Kerosene heaters, once the sole heating option before electric models became available, remain popular among families who use them to gather, make tea, or warm bread. Khalaf began his career as a teenager, repairing coolers in the summer and heaters in the winter.

“If someone can’t pay, I fix their heater for free,” he said, a gesture that has endeared him to the community he has served for four decades.
