Iraq’s PM Al-Sudani highlights ‘deep ties’ with Lebanon in call with President Joseph Aoun
BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani spoke with Lebanon’s newly elected President Joseph Aoun on Sunday, offering congratulations on his election and emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to strengthening relations with Lebanon, according to a statement from Al-Sudani’s media office.
During the call, Al-Sudani highlighted the “deep ties” between the two nations and underscored the importance of enhancing these relationships to serve the “mutual interests of both brotherly countries.” He also Iraq’s support for Lebanon in various fields, to recover from the aftermath of “the recent war,” referring to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Joseph Aoun, the former commander of Lebanon’s armed forces, was elected as the country’s 14th president on Jan. 9, 2025, ending a two-year vacancy stemming from political deadlock. In the parliamentary session, Aoun secured 99 out of 128 votes in the second round, surpassing the required majority.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani held a phone call today, Sunday, with the newly elected President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, congratulating him on his election as President of the the Republic of Lebanon.
During the call, the Prime Minister emphasized the deep ties between Iraq and Lebanon and the importance of developing and strengthening these relations to serve the mutual interests of both brotherly countries.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Iraq’s support for Lebanon in various fields, highlighting the need to work towards Lebanon’s stability to help the country overcome the aftermath of the recent war.
