Historic Mutasarrif Park reopens in Kut after renovation works

WASIT — Authorities in Wasit have inaugurated the revamped Mutasarrif Park on Saturday night, the oldest park in Kut. The park now serves as a cultural and recreational hub, retaining its historic trees and dedicating half of its area to green spaces.

“The park is crucial as it lies in the city center,” said Mohammad Al-Ghanem, Head of the Parks Division at Kut Municipality, to 964media. “We redesigned it to improve the environmental and aesthetic aspects of the city.”

The redevelopment project, completed in six months at a cost exceeding 400 million IQD ($265, 080), aimed to preserve the park’s heritage while making it suitable for modern cultural and social activities.

Mohammad Al-Azzawi, a local attendee, described the park as a vital part of Kut’s history, dating back to the 1920s. “We are delighted to see it renewed as a venue for cultural events and gatherings, as well as a green space for families to enjoy,” he said.

“It is remarkable to see the opening of a new public space in the crowded city center as part of efforts to enhance the environment and green areas. This is the city we aspire to see,” he added.

Wasit Governorate, located in eastern Iraq, lies southeast of Baghdad. Its capital is Kut, situated on the left bank of the Tigris River.
