Hundreds run race promoting health and sustainability in Wasit’s Al-Hayy

WASIT — More than 750 young and emerging athletes participated in a community-organized race in Al-Hayy district, southern Wasit governorate, to support sustainable development and promote physical health and sports culture. The 4-kilometer race began at Al-Zaytoun Street, with participants showcasing their athletic talents in a spirited event. Athletes from the Al-Jihad Forum in Kut secured the top three positions.

“The race covered a distance of four kilometers, starting and ending at Al-Zaytoun Street in Al-Hayy,” said Haider Jabbar, coordinator for Friends of Sustainable Development in Wasit, speaking to 964media. “The event included participants of various age groups, from youth to adults, and was organized under the supervision of the Role Model Community and Friends of Sustainable Development, with support from the local government.”

Jabbar emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering a culture of sports and health among the youth. “The atmosphere was vibrant, with a remarkable turnout. In Wasit, we need more of these sporting events, as they not only promote health but also uncover talents that could serve the country in the future,” he added.

Waleed Al-Ageeli, founder of the AL-Qudua Community, highlighted the race’s broader mission. “This event was part of a nationwide initiative held in 15 Iraqi governorates to empower youth and revitalize concepts of health and physical activity,” he told 964media. “More than 750 athletes joined us, coming from Kut, nearby towns, and Al-Hayy itself.”

Jaber Taraf Al-Quraishi, a sports mentor, expressed gratitude for the organizers’ efforts. “We thank the organizations that supervised and supported this race in Al-Hayy. Our team from Kut participated enthusiastically and proudly achieved the top three positions,” he said.
