Honey production affected by the disease

Paralysis virus afflicts bee populations in northeastern Duhok

DUHOK, October 4 — A paralysis virus is once again afflicting bee populations in Akre district, leading to a drop in honey production.

Local agricultural authorities attribute the virus to seasonal changes and the arrival of autumn. Despite their efforts to combat the illness, beekeepers say honey production has noticeably dropped off.

Akre district is home to 570 registered beekeepers and approximately 20,000 beehives. According to statistics from the local Directorate of Agriculture, the area typically produces around 50 tons of honey annually.

Beekeeper Shawki Saleh shared:  “The virus has caused significant damage to the bees. I have sprayed medicine three times to treat some beehives.”

In one village alone, the virus has reportedly destroyed 60 bee hives.

Karwan Jamal, an official with the Akre Directorate of Agriculture, explained: “The virus tends to spread in Akre district during this time of the year due to the changing seasons, rendering the bees unable to fly. We provide medicine and treatment supplies to beekeepers to help them manage their hives.”
