Duhok launches cleanup and expansion of Hishkaro River to prevent flooding

DUHOK — Duhok Municipality has launched the cleanup and expansion efforts for the Hishkaro River intersecting the city, urging residents and locals in the area to refrain from dumping waste into the river.

The Hishkaro River spans approximately five kilometers within the governorate and has been a source of flooding concerns due to heavy rainfall in recent years. Past floods have caused both casualties and material losses.

According to Duhok Municipality, the efforts involve clearing debris and waste while expanding certain sections of the river. “We call on residents to support municipal teams and avoid disposing of waste in the river,” a statement from the municipality said.

Earlier, Ismail Mustafa, spokesperson for the Duhok Municipality, told 964media that much of the river requires widening to prevent rainwater overflow and flooding. Plans are in place to expand sections of the river by up to 15 meters to accommodate heavy rainfall.

Last year’s flooding in Duhok, which lasted several days, resulted in the loss of three lives and damaged nearly 160 homes. Several families were displaced, leaving their properties and belongings behind. Additionally, the floods caused damage to several  parks and trees in the affected areas.
