'Simple, quiet spots like this'
Iconic eatery Hamada Abu Al-Jibda remains part of Nasiriyah’s culinary heritage
NASIRIYAH — Nestled in the heart of Sayyid Saad Market, Hamada Abu Al-Jibda has become an enduring symbol of Nasiriyah’s cultural and culinary identity. Established in 1997 as a humble cart, the restaurant is now managed by the second generation of the Hamada family and remains a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.
Specializing in grilled liver, hearts, and other organ meats, the restaurant’s signature liver skewer is priced at an affordable 3,000 Iraqi dinars ($2), drawing a loyal following.
“I started working here in my childhood with my uncle Hamada and my father. Today, I run the restaurant, having learned the trade from them. Despite the simplicity of the place, we focus on offering the highest quality grills with care and passion,” Abbas Kazem, the current manager, told 964media.
Operating daily from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m., the eatery is especially busy on Fridays, attracting workers, shop owners, and employees. “We serve various grilled items like liver and hearts, but our signature liver skewers are what earned us our reputation. Along with the food, we provide water, tea, and service at no extra charge,” Kazem said.
The restaurant’s legacy resonates deeply with its patrons.
“I used to work in the market and would come here regularly for the grills. Now, as a [public sector] employee, I still visit occasionally with colleagues. This place is tied to the history of Sayyid Saad Street and Nasiriyah itself,” said long-time customer Wisam Karim.
For others, the appeal goes beyond the food. “Our cities’ most charming aspect is their heritage eateries. Even with the advent of modern designs and upscale restaurants, we seek out simple, quiet spots like this, which serve as symbols and landmarks of our communities,” said Star Jabbar, a loyal patron for decades.
Hamada Abu Al-Jibda continues to thrive, offering a nostalgic yet high-quality culinary experience. Its unpretentious charm, affordability, and enduring legacy make it a unique gem in Nasiriyah’s bustling landscape. For many, the restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it is a cherished connection to the city’s past and a celebration of its enduring traditions.
