Cyclists celebrate Arab Cyclist Day with marathon through Baghdad streets
BAGHDAD — Cyclists of all ages and genders filled the streets of Baghdad on Saturday to celebrate Arab Cyclist Day in a marathon organized by the Iraqi Central Cycling Federation in collaboration with Al-Rafidain University. The event attracted participants from across Iraq, following a route along Palestine Street, starting at the Al-Rafidain University gate, looping through Maysaloon Square, and returning to the starting point.
Organizers aimed to promote health, fitness, and environmental responsibility through cycling.
“This marathon, held by the Iraqi Cycling Federation in cooperation with Baghdad’s branch, celebrates Arab Cyclist Day with the participation of amateur teams and enthusiasts from all over Iraq,” said Alaa Al-Rumahi, captain of Iraq’s national cycling team. “We, as a team, participate annually in all cycling marathons and sports events across governorates.”
Al-Rumahi emphasized the benefits of cycling, noting that it promotes human health, reduces environmental pollution, and encourages young people to adopt cycling as a regular activity.
Alaa Jassim, head of the Iraqi Cycling Federation, highlighted the event’s inclusivity. “Today, we’re hosting this marathon in celebration of Arab Cyclist Day,” Jassim told 964media. “This event is open to all ages and genders, with participants from cities like Mosul and Najaf, along with players from the national team, Iraqi clubs, and popular local teams.”
Iraqi national team member Suha Faeq echoed the importance of such events, saying, “We joined this event as a group of women to promote cycling as a sport.”
Faeq encouraged women across Iraq to take part in athletic events, emphasizing the health and fitness benefits of cycling.
