Son alleged perpetrator

Visually impaired mother rescued after nine-day confinement in Kirkuk

KIRKUK — A visually impaired mother was rescued by Kirkuk police after being locked in a room for nine days by her son, who authorities allege was under the influence of narcotics. The incident occurred in a third-floor apartment in Kirkuk’s Musalla neighborhood, where the son reportedly kept the door locked from the outside.

The situation came to light on Thursday at approximately 11:30 p.m., when the Azadi Crime Prevention Unit responded to a tip-off. Officers arrested the son and freed the mother, who had endured prolonged confinement.

“The mother had been confined to the room for nine days and nights. Although food was provided, she was unable to leave as the door was kept locked,” a source from the Crime Prevention Unit told 964media. The source added, “The son was reportedly intoxicated and had been romantically involved with a married woman.”

Authorities disclosed that the son had been drinking with the woman’s husband on the night before his arrest, an incident that ultimately led to his detention.

The mother, who is also diabetic and hypertensive, reportedly shouted for help during her confinement, feeling desperate and contemplating self-harm. Her cries were ignored by her son and his companions, prompting concerned neighbors to contact the police.

Police emphasised the mother’s fragile health and the distressing conditions of her confinement, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the case.
