Iraq braces for severe weather as meteorological authorities warn of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology has issued a weather advisory, warning of continued instability across Iraq, with most regions experiencing cloudy skies. Much of the north, center, and west will see heavy cloud cover, while the south is expected to have partly cloudy skies, occasionally breaking into clear spells.
According to the organization, “There are persistent chances of rainfall, particularly in northern regions, which are expected to receive abundant rain at varying intensities throughout the day.” Thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, are likely, with rain showers anticipated to move from northern areas into the central and western regions. The rainfall intensity is expected to diminish as it progresses southward, though central areas may still see rain during the night.
The forecast also indicates moderate southeastern winds, with speeds between 15 and 35 kilometers per hour. “Some areas may experience changes in wind direction at the surface level, with a potential shift to westerly winds in the western parts of the country or moderate northerly winds,” the statement added.
Visibility may be significantly impacted in areas experiencing heavy rainfall, with estimates ranging from 2 to 4 kilometers, increasing to 4 to 6 kilometers in the morning due to light fog, particularly in the north. In mountainous regions, visibility could drop to between 2 and 4 kilometers at night as moderate fog is expected to develop.
In response to the adverse weather conditions, the Iraqi National Security Service issued a statement directing immediate assistance for those affected by flooding. “The head of the Iraqi National Security Service has instructed all formations of the service to mobilize immediately to provide relief to those impacted by floods and heavy rains across all governorates,” the statement read. The directive includes intensified coordination with service agencies and the mobilization of engineering and logistical resources to provide rapid and comprehensive support to affected residents.
Due to heavy rainfall and flood warnings, several Iraqi governorates, including Baghdad, Diyala, Salah Al-Din, Anbar, and Kirkuk, have announced school and university closures for Sunday, with exceptions for standardized exams.
