Anti-drug operation nets 16 kg of narcotics, 43 arrests in Kurdistan Region October crackdown
ERBIL — The Erbil Directorate of Narcotics Control reported Thursday that an extensive anti-drug operation across Erbil and Duhok governorates in October led to the seizure of over 16 kilograms of illegal substances and the arrest of 43 suspects, including key dealers and traffickers.
The operation, targeting drug trafficking hubs in Duhok, Zakho, Soran, and the Haji Omaran border crossing, resulted in the confiscation of 13 kilograms of crystal meth, 3 kilograms of marijuana, and 172 grams of heroin. “Our team has dismantled several trafficking networks, delivering a significant blow to both local and international drug operations,” a spokesperson for the directorate said.
Those detained include individuals linked to international networks with extensive operations. “This month-long crackdown underscores our commitment to eradicating narcotics from our communities,” the spokesperson added.
All suspects were transferred to authorities for prosecution under Iraq’s anti-drug laws. The Erbil Anti-Drug Directorate confirmed ongoing efforts to target narcotics distribution across the region.
Earlier, on Aug. 25, the directorate arrested three individuals tied to a “dangerous gang” in possession of 85 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, underscoring escalating concerns over drug trafficking in the Kurdistan Region.
On Oct. 15, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani described the threat of psychoactive drugs as akin to terrorism, warning, “Mafias and criminal traders have made the Kurdistan Region a target for their nefarious plans, exploiting our region’s geography as a gateway to smuggle drugs to other areas.” Barzani called for intensified efforts against these networks.
