Man claiming spiritual powers arrested for extorting over 150 women in Basra

BASRA — Iraqi security forces in Basra have arrested a man accused of exploiting over 150 women financially and sexually by claiming to possess spiritual powers, the National Security Service reported Friday.

After multiple complaints, the NSS investigated and gathered evidence, eventually raiding the suspect’s residence in the Zubair district. During questioning, the man allegedly confessed to manipulating women by preying on their beliefs, charging them between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Iraqi dinars ($340 to $680) for his supposed services.

The NSS has referred the suspect to authorities for legal action. The case highlights a continuing issue in certain Iraqi communities where individuals claiming spiritual abilities exploit vulnerable individuals seeking personal guidance, despite religious prohibitions on such practices.
