Iraqi PM discusses regional tensions with Saudi crown prince ahead of proposed Islamic summit

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani held a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional challenges. The talks centered on efforts to halt ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon and preparations for an Islamic summit in response to escalating developments in the Middle East.

Since Dec. 24, Iraq has been advocating for an Islamic summit. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein previously called for an immediate Arab and Islamic summit aimed at “unifying efforts to halt Israeli aggression against Lebanon.” He made the proposal during a ministerial-level meeting of the Arab League Council in December.
