Three dead, two injured in crash on Penjwen-Sulaymaniyah road

SULAYMANIYAH — A fatal crash occurred earlier today on the Penjwen-Sulaymaniyah road, resulting in the deaths of three people and critically injuring two others, Acting Mayor of Penjwen, Hemen Ibrahim, confirmed to 964media.

“The crash took place near the village of Tarratawan, below Alvarez subdistrict in Penjwen, involving an Iranian flatbed truck and a Nissan Sunny,” Ibrahim said. “Sadly, three individuals lost their lives, and two others were injured.” The identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, and their origins remain unknown.

The bodies of the deceased and the injured were transported to Said Sadiq Hospital for treatment.

CCTV footage showed the Nissan Sunny veering into the opposite lane, colliding with the truck. The road is a narrow route notorious for its hazardous conditions, exacerbating the risks of such collisions.

Kamal Saadoun, director of operations at Shahid Shawkat Hospital in Said Sadiq district, confirmed that the three deceased included two women and a child, while the injured remain in critical condition and have been transferred to Sulaymaniyah for specialized care.

The Penjwen road, which leads to the Bashmakh border crossing, is heavily trafficked by large trucks, adding to its dangers. The route is essential for trade between the Kurdistan Region and Iran, yet its deteriorating condition has led to numerous deadly crashes. Calls for urgent improvements to the road’s infrastructure have intensified, with many citing the increasing number of fatalities as a result of poor road conditions and heavy traffic.
