Ayad Allawi urges US to take a decisive role in ending regional strikes

BAGHDAD – Ayad Allawi, leader of the National Coalition, on Sunday called on the United States to take a stronger and more consistent role in halting rocket attacks in the region, urging that U.S. involvement should be firm and not contradictory.

In a statement, Allawi emphasized that the situation requires “bold Arab political leadership and a strategic vision” to achieve stability and security, particularly in Palestine and Lebanon. He also urged Iran to uphold its commitments to Arab nations and to adopt “wise measures” to resolve conflicts, end the fighting, and stop the bloodshed.

“The time has come for courageous actions to stop the violence,” Allawi stressed, pointing to the urgent need for diplomatic solutions in the Middle East.

Full statement from Ayad Allawi’s office:

The escalating conflict in the region, whether in Gaza or southern Lebanon, requires a comprehensive and realistic approach based on clear foundations to achieve stability and peace.

In Gaza, the humanitarian situation has become catastrophic due to the ongoing bombardment, which is destroying infrastructure and displacing thousands of civilians.

This escalation cannot be separated from the roots of the decades-long conflict, which stems from the absence of a just political solution to the Palestinian issue.

Any international or regional efforts that do not consider the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and an end to the occupation will only be temporary solutions that do not address the core of the problem.

What is needed today is not only an end to military escalation but also serious negotiations leading to a comprehensive solution that achieves just peace and guarantees Palestinian rights in accordance with international law.

In Lebanon, the country is experiencing a total collapse due to the heavy bombardment in the south, Bekaa, and parts of Beirut and other areas, leading to mass displacement and severe damage to infrastructure.

This dire situation comes amid a deep political and economic crisis that has plagued Lebanon for years, exacerbated by foreign interventions and the erosion of state institutions.

Lebanon’s stability can only be achieved by rebuilding the state and its institutions on strong national foundations that reinforce its sovereignty and prevent its collapse in the face of internal and external challenges.

Temporary solutions, whether in Gaza or Lebanon, will not contribute to long-term stability. What is needed is genuine international commitment leading to a fair and comprehensive settlement in Palestine and ensuring support for Lebanon in building a strong state capable of asserting its sovereignty and protecting its people.

This moment requires bold Arab political leadership and a strategic vision to achieve security and stability in Palestine and Lebanon, as this war cannot expand under the current military conditions and Israeli insistence.

The United States must play an important, not a contradictory, role in silencing the rockets, and Iran must fulfil its commitments to the Arabs. This necessitates wise measures to resolve these conflicts and stop the battles and bloodshed.

We also call on the world, particularly the Islamic and Arab countries, to speak the truth in favour of the oppressed peoples that Israel is trying to suppress, such as the Palestinian and Lebanese people. These nations must support the legitimacy in Lebanon and Palestine before things spiral into a destructive global war.
