Al-Hakim urges UN action to halt Israeli bombing in Lebanon and Gaza

BAGHDAD — The head of the Hikma Movement, Ammar Al-Hakim, expressed concern on Thursday over the ongoing Israeli bombing of Lebanon and Gaza, calling for immediate intervention by the United Nations and the Security Council.

Al-Hakim urged these bodies to take the necessary measures to compel Israel to stop the war and alleviate the suffering of civilians.

Full statement from Ammar al-Hakim’s office:

We share the concern of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, regarding the tragic situation caused by Israeli bombing on Lebanon and its resilient and steadfast people.

Joining our voice with what the Secretary-General presented in his briefing to the UN Security Council, we emphasize the importance of his accurate assessment and explicit confirmation that the Israeli military and its war machine have deliberately targeted what he described as deadly strikes on populated areas. He also warned of the expansion of forced displacement under the barrage of missiles raining down on civilians by land, air, and sea.

Mr. Guterres’ warning of what he called the potential outbreak of hell in Lebanon is a clear and unequivocal acknowledgment of the aggressive approach adopted by the occupying entity in this unjust war, the disregard for international charters, treaties, and rules of engagement, which consider homes, places of worship, hospitals, and service institutions as sanctuaries that should remain off-limits during conflicts.

Therefore, based on these points, we call upon the UN Security Council, the United Nations, and their humanitarian and rights bodies to take all necessary measures to compel the Israeli entity to stop the war in Lebanon and Palestine as soon as possible. We also welcome international calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, as a prelude to ending the war, ensuring the return of displaced persons, and beginning reconstruction efforts.
