Iraqi prime minister discusses displaced Iraqis with IOM director-general at UN General Assembly

NEWSROOM — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met with the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, Amy Pope, on Monday during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting focused on the conditions of displaced Iraqis, the support needed for their voluntary return, and projects aimed at improving living conditions in their home regions.

Al-Sudani departed for New York on Saturday to lead Iraq’s delegation at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani Meets with the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration in New York.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ms. Amy Pope, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting focused on the situation of Iraqi displaced people and others in refugee camps, as well as the support provided by the Iraqi government for their voluntary return. Additionally, they discussed projects aimed at providing services and requirements for a dignified life in their residing areas before their return.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani commended the organization’s efforts in Iraq, particularly in supporting the construction of the Kocho housing complex in Sinjar. He also emphasized the importance of the organization carrying out specialized initiatives to address the impacts of climate change on residents of the southern provinces.

Ms. Amy Pope emphasized that Iraq is an important partner and that the challenges it has faced have provided it with valuable experience in addressing many issues related to migration and internal displacement. She also expressed her desire to benefit from Iraq’s expertise, which has led the organization to seek Iraq’s membership, by ongoing negotiations between both sides regarding membership mechanism.
