Nouri al-Maliki calls on neighboring countries to respect Iraq’s sovereignty

BAGHDAD, September 21 — Nouri al-Maliki, former Iraqi prime minister and the head of the State of Law Coalition, called on neighboring countries to respect Iraq’s sovereignty and refrain from using force during a meeting Wednesday with Bafel Talabani, the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

A statement released by the State of Law Coalition said:

The meeting discussed the latest political and security developments, as well as the repercussions of the attack on Arbat Airport in Sulaymaniyah governorate.

Mr. Al-Maliki strongly condemned the recent incident, considering it a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. He called on neighboring countries to respect Iraq’s sovereignty and avoid using a forceful approach to resolve lingering issues. He emphasized the importance of continuing national efforts to restore stability and provide more services to citizens in various fields.

In response, Mr. Bafel Talabani praised Mr. Nouri al-Maliki’s supportive stance toward resolving existing issues between the federal government and the Kurdistan region through dialogue. He highlighted their clear policy and objective, which is to provide services and resolve problems based on the constitution. Coordination and joint efforts, he noted, are essential for stability and building a promising future for the Iraqi people.
