'Cloud of Sweet'

Basra’s mobile dessert truck offers outdoor treats and affordable prices

BASRA — Two young men from Basra have launched “Cloud of Sweet,” a mobile food truck that serves a variety of ice cream, desserts, and both cold and hot drinks. Offering an alternative to enclosed cafés and restaurants, the outdoor setup takes advantage of Basra’s cooler weather as summer ends. Prices are roughly half of what larger establishments charge.

The truck, originally imported from Sweden, was purchased from a seller in Anbar. Owners Haider and his partner spent two months modifying it to fit their needs. Their goal is to bring a street food experience to Basra, offering affordable treats with prices ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 Iraqi dinars ($0.6 to $3.3).

“We, as young people with limited income, can’t afford to open expensive businesses, so we decided to create this unique café,” Haider told 964media. “We were inspired by European street food culture, and after working in various restaurants and cafés, we honed our skills.”

He added, “Our aim is to offer something different, encouraging families and young people to enjoy the open spaces of parks and gardens rather than staying inside cafés and restaurants.”

Customer Maryam Samah, a frequent visitor, praised the outdoor experience. “We prefer these open spaces over restaurants. It’s relaxing, and projects like this are becoming popular in Basra, especially on weekends.”

The truck has become a popular destination, especially on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, attracting families who enjoy the outdoor atmosphere near Basra’s public parks.
