Deadly week for key road

Three family members killed in head-on collision on Kirkuk-Tikrit highway

KIRKUK — A severe collision early Sunday morning on the Kirkuk-Tikrit highway claimed the lives of three family members, according to local traffic authorities.

Ahmed Majid, a spokesperson for the Kirkuk City Traffic Directorate, told 964media that the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the Rashad subdistrict in Daquq district. A Kia cargo truck collided head-on with another cargo truck during an improper overtaking maneuver. “Three passengers in the Kia truck, including one woman, tragically lost their lives. All victims were transferred to the medical examiner’s office,” Majid said.

Majid noted that this marks the fourth fatal accident on the same road in the past week, primarily linked to an incomplete bridge in the area.

The incident follows a string of deadly crashes on the highway, including a late-night crash on Sept. 9 that claimed four lives, including Sheikh Safaa Al-Rishawi, the deputy governor of Anbar. The day before, four lives were lost in two separate accidents on the same stretch of road.
