Al-Hakim discusses bilateral relations, anti-corruption efforts with EU ambassador
BAGHDAD—The head of the Al-Hikma Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, met with European Union Ambassador to Iraq Thomas Seiler on Monday to discuss bilateral relations and Iraq’s expertise in counter-terrorism efforts.
In a statement, al-Hakim emphasized that Iraq has “real experience” in fighting terrorism that could benefit other nations facing similar security threats. The discussions also focused on cooperation in combating corruption and drug trafficking, as well as accountability in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Full statement from Al-Hakim’s office:
We discussed with the European Union Ambassador to Baghdad, His Excellency Mr. Thomas Seiler, the shared files between Iraq and the European Union. We emphasized the importance of the Union to Iraq and called for strengthening bilateral relations in a way that serves the interests of both sides. We confirmed our support for the government’s efforts, in cooperation with the European Union, on issues related to combating terrorism, corruption, and drugs. We pointed out that Iraq has a real experience in fighting terrorism, which could be useful for countries suffering from terrorism, whether it be a security or military threat.
We highlighted the importance of learning from the experiences of others in combating corruption and renewed our call for a “Trial of the Century” regarding the “Theft of the Century” crime, ensuring that the public is informed of its details and those involved. We also stressed the importance of combating corruption by drying up its sources, using modern technology and electronic applications, and bypassing obstructive bureaucratic procedures. We emphasized the need to conclude the international coalition against ISIS file, stating the importance of replacing the coalition with bilateral relations with some of its countries in a way that preserves Iraq’s interests, security, and sovereignty.
We also renewed our call to stop the war in Gaza, holding the international community responsible for this, and stressed the necessity of applying international laws and decisions without selectivity to the usurping Israeli entity.
