Iraqi airstrikes kill seven ISIS militants

TUZ KHURMATU — Iraqi warplanes struck ISIS militant hideouts in the Palkana mountain range, east of Salah Al-Din’s Tuz Khurmatu district, in two airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of seven ISIS militants, including a senior leader, officials reported.

Ali Hashim Hosseini, spokesperson for the Northern Axis of the Popular Mobilization Forces, stated in an interview with 964media, “Using F-16 aircraft, the counterterrorism and intelligence agency targeted several hideouts and tunnels harboring ISIS militants.”

“The airstrikes killed seven ISIS militants, among them a high-ranking and dangerous leader,” Hosseini added.

He emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Iraqi army to eradicate ISIS strongholds in the Tuz Khurmatu district.

The Islamic State, which seized vast territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014 and proclaimed a caliphate, was driven out of Iraq in 2017 by Iraqi forces and the Peshmerga, with backing from a U.S.-led coalition. The group lost its final stronghold in Syria in 2019 to U.S.-supported Kurdish forces.

According to a January report by the United Nations, an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 ISIS fighters remain active in Iraq and Syria.
