Electoral commission extends candidate registration deadline for Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections

ERBIL — The Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq announced Thursday that it has extended the registration deadline for candidates in the upcoming Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections to Monday, June 24.

The commission initially declared that the registration period would close at the end of official working hours today, Thursday. This change allows additional time for candidate submissions following the Eid al-Adha holiday, according to the commission’s statement.

“The Independent High Electoral Commission announces the extension of registration for coalitions, parties, individual candidates, and candidates for minorities wishing to participate in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections of 2024,” the commission declared in a statement.

Jumana Al-Ghalai, a spokesperson for the commission, noted that preparations are on track. “Preparations are ongoing for the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections,” Al-Ghalai said, adding that the Kurdistan Democratic Party has confirmed its participation.

As of June 9, thirteen parties had registered to participate, with the recent confirmation by the KDP that they will contest the elections. The party had previously announced a boycott in March.

The commission, emphasizing its technical and non-political role, stated it is fully prepared to execute the elections, adhering to legal, administrative, financial, and technical standards set by the Federal Court and the Judicial Council.

While the commission has proposed September 5 as the election date, it awaits an official decree from the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region to finalize this. Al-Ghalai emphasized that this date is still not set, addressing conflicting reports in the media.
