Al-Fateh Mosque in Baghdad continues tradition of Taraweeh prayers

BAGHDAD — In the Al-Mashtal area of eastern Baghdad, the Mohammed Al-Fateh Mosque, notable for its grandeur yet simplicity, continues its nightly Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, even as it experiences a significant ebb in its congregation’s numbers this year.

Since its inception in 1995, the mosque has been a sanctuary where worshippers gather to perform the cherished tradition of Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan.

Saad Yassin, the prayer leader at the mosque, told 964media, “We hold Taraweeh prayers daily after the Isha [evening] prayer until 9 p.m., interspersed with supplications and prayers, followed by a session for teaching and reciting the Holy Quran.” “Thankfully,” he adds, “the mosque welcomes Muslims from all sects.”

In the past, there were so many worshipers that the mosque’s main area would get too crowded and people would have to pray outside, recall attendees.

Yet, this Ramadan paints a different scene. Where once the halls echoed with the harmonious recitations of worshippers, there now exists a gentle hush. Attendees lament the noticeable decline in numbers, yearning for the days when every inch of the mosque was embraced by the devout.

“The most prominent reason [for the decline in congregation] is life’s hardships, work, people’s preoccupations, and other commitments,” Yassin explains, echoing the sentiments of many.

However, amidst the softened echoes, a steadfast resolve persists. For those who still attend the mosque, Ramadan nights and Taraweeh prayers remain an unwavering commitment.

Ahmed Abdullah who is a regular worshipper at the mosque, shared his sentiments with 964media, “We come to the mosque to join the congregation, which has a great reward, especially during the days and nights of the blessed month of Ramadan.”
