Iraqi PM seeks closer ties with Armenia amid Khachaturyan’s visit to Baghdad

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani met with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan on Tuesday, welcoming him on an official visit to Baghdad and discussing ways to bolster bilateral relations.

The meeting came after a series of reporedly positive engagements between officials of the two countries. According to a readout of the visit, Al-Sudani expressed appreciation for Armenia’s commitment to strengthening ties, emphasizing the potential for Armenian companies to contribute to major Iraqi projects such as the Development Road and Al Faw Grand Port.

Al-Sudani further proposed the establishment of a joint business forum, an airline route connecting the two nations, a memorandum to avoid double taxation, and simplified visa procedures to facilitate tourism. He further highlighted Iraq’s interest in collaborating with Armenia in the energy, information technology, and e-governance sectors.

President Khachaturyan arrived leading a delegation of officials and business representatives, aiming to explore opportunities for expanded economic partnership.

He reportedly expressed Yerevan’s readiness to collaborate with Iraq in areas like information technology, banking, and clean energy initiatives.
