Kurdistan Region seeks from foreign companies for minefield clearance
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) General Directorate of Mine Affairs has issued a call for foreign companies specializing in mine and ammunition clearance to operate within the region, offering support and streamlined processes to facilitate their work.
Ali Mohammed Amin Miran, General Director of Technical Affairs, told 964media that three foreign companies and several organizations are currently working on mine and ammunition activities in the region. “The directorate is prepared to offer further assistance and simplify the process for additional foreign entities interested in similar work,” he stated.
“We’re ready to collaborate with the region’s Directorate of Company Registration to provide more facilities for foreign companies, encouraging further investment in the demining sector,” Miran added.
Official statistics show 183 square kilometers of land across Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, Halabja, and Garmiyan are contaminated with mines, with an additional 72 square kilometers identified as dangerous areas. Five districts are particularly affected: Sharbazher (37 sq. km), Penjwen (26 sq. km), Soran (22 sq. km), Choman (21 sq. km), and Halabja (12 sq. km).
The Kurdistan Region’s Mine Action Agency previously announced the successful clearance of 33 minefields and 11 additional areas contaminated with explosives in 2023, totaling nearly 3 million square meters of cleared land.
