Early blossoms in Basra palms raise hopes for fruitful season, water supply remains key

BASRA — Palm farmers in northern Basra are celebrating an early blossoming of their trees, sparking optimism for a bountiful harvest this year. However, experts caution that sufficient water supplies remain crucial for the fruits to fully mature.

Date palms undergo a distinct development cycle, beginning with the emergence of blossoms on both male and female trees. These then transform into “strands,” followed by green dates called “Al-Jamri,” which eventually ripen into mature dates.

Local farmer Abu Mohammed told 964media that male “Al-Fahal” palms, particularly the “Al-Sayer” variety, displayed blossoms around 12 days earlier than their usual mid-February appearance. He attributed the phenomenon to lower humidity levels in the region.

Mustafa Khairallah, head of the local Al-Madina agriculture department, anticipates a successful harvest if adequate irrigation is provided throughout the fruit development stage. He cautioned that declining river water levels pose a potential threat to the yield.

Al-Madina district is renowned for its high-quality dates. This year, the early blossoming induced by reduced humidity is expected to further enhance both the quality and quantity of the harvest.
