Hopeful for revival

Egyptian actress Elham Shahin pays tribute to Iraqi cinema

BAGHDAD — Renowned Egyptian actress Elham Shahin has expressed her admiration for the Iraqi arts scene and its artists, including Hind Kamil and Shaza Salem, noting their broad appeal and expressing hope for a resurgence in Iraqi cinema.

In a statement, Shahin shared, “I’ve seen several old Iraqi films that have participated in festivals. Unfortunately, Iraqi cinema produces few films, but I am hopeful for a significant revival. There’s a large and talented group of artists like Hind Kamil and Shaza Salem, among other notable names. I’ve also enjoyed films by the expatriate Iraqi director Jaafar Muraad, which were not shot in Iraq,” highlighting, “Iraqi art enjoys a widespread presence.”

Shahin further voiced her hope for the continuation of such festivals, stating they serve as a reflection of the host country’s cultural dynamism.

These events provide artists with opportunities to engage with peers from across the Arab world, fostering the exchange of new ideas and projects.
