Thunderstorms forecast for northern Iraq

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Authority said Sunday’s weather will be clear with some clouds in the central and southern regions, while northern areas will see partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with light to moderate thundershowers.

In a report, the authority said temperatures in the central region would remain close to Saturday’s levels, while temperatures would rise by several degrees in the southern region and slightly increase in the north.

The authority said winds would be light and variable at speeds of 5 to 10 kilometers per hour before shifting to northwesterly winds at 20 to 30 kph. Wind activity is expected to intensify at intervals, reaching up to 50 kph and causing dust and sand waves.

Horizontal visibility is expected to range between 8 and 10 kilometers, dropping to 3 to 5 kilometers in areas affected by dust.

The authority’s forecast for the coming days said conditions on Monday and Tuesday would remain mostly clear with some clouds across Iraq, with moderate northwesterly winds and visibility between 6 and 8 kilometers.

Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to rise slightly compared with the previous day across the country, followed by another increase on Wednesday, according to the forecast.

By Thursday, the authority expects hot and clear weather with scattered clouds, while southeasterly winds will gradually shift to moderate northwesterly winds. Temperatures are forecast to rise by several degrees nationwide.
